Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter has been diognosed with rectal cancer. The doctor told her she has to have chemo and radiation. The cancer has not spread to her lymph nodes. She said she would have to have surgery and possibly a stamos bag. Can t they repair the rectum instead of having a bag? She is very concerned and is only 48 years old.
If the rectal cancer is to be excised altogether, then they have to make an accessory pathway for passage of fecal matter. This they would do by taking out the colonic portion (called colostomy) and attaching the bag. Conservation of rectal portion can backfire. It can regrow, spread and metastasize leading to death.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
