Suggest Home Remedies For Wheezing And COPD

HI, my husband had a COPD and in last few days he started to wheeze. (Of course, the weather is colder where we live). Could you let me know how he can treat the wheezing at home? He is using Symbicort, Ventolin and Albuteral nebulizer. Thank you for your advise.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The ventolin inhaler and the albuteral nebulizer are the reliever medications and the symbicort is a preventer. This means that the symbicort would not help with the acute attack but would prevent one from occurring.

He should use ventolin or the albuterol to treat the acute attack. The ventolin would be taken as 4 to 6 puffs every 20 mins if needed. If there is no relief with the continued use of the inhaler, then he may need a course of steroids. If a bacterial infection is suspected, antibiotics may be needed as well.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
