Dietitian & Nutritionist 's  Response
Good evening Ms. Patel,
I share your concern as your BMI puts you in the severely undernourished category.

First, for your metabolic safety and to avoid any possible "refeeding" complications, begin increasing calories slowly. If you do not know about calories, please find some resources on the computer to help guide you.

I suggest that you 1) purchase a quality multivitamin supplement; 2) Make an appointment with a dietitian if at all possible to review a personalized diet you can afford and will eat; 3) eat 6 small meals per day whether you are hungry or not; 4) Include high calorie foods in your meals such as whole milk, whole curd, whole yogurt, nuts, nut butter, virgin olive oil, olives, avocados, seeds, dried fruits, coconut

Information:

Calculations state that you are maintaining your weight on 1400 calories per day and to gain one pound or .5 kg per week you will have to eat 1855 kcals per week. This will result in a weight gain of 4.28 kg in 60 days so why don't you kick up the calories to 2000 per day.

Start increasing gradually over the course of a week. Extra exercise will burn calories so not advised unless you do muscle strengthening exercises. Eat a snack late at night every night - mostly carbohydrates, no protein.

Drink nutritional supplements (350 calories per can) or make your own with ice cream or full fat greek yogurt, frozen berries, full fat milk, honey.

Other suggestions:
Choices include butter, regular margarine, vegetable oils, peanut butter, and mayonnaise.
Whole milk, half-and-half, and cream have more calories than skim or low-fat milk.
Higher-fat meats and whole-milk cheeses provide more calories than lean or low-fat types.

Sample American Diet:

Breakfast

1 large egg, scrambled
1 medium biscuit
1 tablespoon jam
2 tablespoons butter
6 oz apple juice
Morning Snack
1 cup instant pudding

Lunch

4 oz tuna salad (with mayonnaise, oil, relish)
1 hard-boiled egg
6 crackers
2 canned peach halves
2 tablespoons cream cheese
4 walnut halves
6 oz grape juice

Afternoon Snack

1/2 cup orange juice in smoothie
1/4 cup frozen strawberries in smoothie
1 banana in smoothie
1 oz protein powder in smoothie
Evening Meal
3 oz ground beef patty
2 tablespoons gravy
15 French-fried potatoes with ketchup
3 large stalks broccoli
2 tablespoons cheese sauce
2 slices bread
1 tablespoon butter

Evening Snack

1 medium scoop ice cream
2 tablespoons chocolate syrup

I hope this is of some help. Regards, Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
