Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
HI, I m on a very low dose of Atorvastatin, been taking for about 2 years. Over the last few months been having lots of muscle cramping on the right side of my body: upper arm, lower calf and around my ankle.. What other medication is available without this side effect?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Statins share the same side effects although some of the side effects won't occur with another statin. When one of my patients has problems with atorvastatin I usually try either a lower dose of atorvastatin (if feasible) or a less potent statin like pravastatin. Sometimes the side effects disappear. In other cases the side effects still occur with pravastatin. Another potential choice is ezetimibe which is not a statin but it does improve the lipid profile (although not as much as a statin). Your doctor should decide whether you should definitely use another drug or you should just quit the lipid lowering treatment. So in conclusion, ezetimibe is a much less efficacious alternative but perhaps you can also try a less potent statin.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
