Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It may affect some persons but not everyone experiencing these issues. If at age 73,you are presently not having any of these effects then it is possible that you may not.
Alternatives, if you are not comfortable use a nasal spray such as normal saline or Nasonex or Nasocort etc

I hope this helps

my friend has very congested nasal passages, and he cannot breathe through his nose unless he uses otrivine, sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. I understand that otrivine can make the mucus worse, so are there alternatives? He has had two episodes of extended cocaine use (2-3 months each time) (not partying, but self medication for not coping with life) over the last ten years. His nose appears normal shape. He sometimes has blood in his handkerchief if he blows his nose a lot. What to do? Does it seem that his septum is merely irritated?
