Suggest Alternative Treatment For Small Bowel Obstruction Apart From Surgery

Hi my dad has been diagonised with small bowel obstruction- cause not known. Are constantly removing fluid from his stomach through a pipe in his nose.. has not been able to pass stool or sufficient gas.. he has been suggested to try colonoscopy with Baloon to remove obstruction or then surgery.., he s 84, diabetic, has thryroid, has mild sceroisis of liver, border line creatinine is high.. in short surgery not v easy., kindly advice ..

Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

I am abdominal surgeon and to be clear, if there is mechanical obstruction then there is no possibility of any other treatment but surgery. If there is stenosis or stricture or functionl obstruction then balloon dilatation, and some other non surgical procedure may be employed. He is in advanced age and have some comorbidities but sugical procedures can be done in much sicker patients todays due to advanced measures of anesthsiologist. SO,regarding to this fear, you should not be concerned about surgery outcome.
