Sore Eyes With Fluid Discharge. Inflammation?

Yesterday my left eye was tearing a lot, by the end of the day the corner of eye was very sore and irritated from the drainage all day. Today when I woke up the outer corner of my eye and half of upper lid were reddish purple and a bit inflamed. As the day has progressed, it is now all purple and inflammation is the same. Any ideas?

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
hi there, you seem to be suffering from conjuctivitis. There are various causes for the same which include viral, bacterial, fungal, allergic,or due to foreign body. Your symptoms are more suggestive of a viral origin and the inflammation at the corner of the outer eye is due to maceration due to tear/constant rubbing. You can use eye drops that contain an antihistaminic along with an antibiotic to take care of the reddness and to prevent getting a superimposed bacterial infection. Viral infectioons are usually self limiting. If it doesn't get better with the eye drops then you may visit an opthalmologist to rule out any injury to the cornea due to foreign body. Do not rub your eyes with a rough tissue or cloth and do use warm water to wash your eyes frequently to get rid of the scab or secretions periodically. Hope you recover soon,.take care.

Hi,
Thanks for the query.watery eyes or tearing eyes may be due to several reasons like
*Blepharitis (eyelid inflammation)
*Common Cold
*Foreign body in the eye
*Hay fever etc
*Conjunctivitis
*Cornea irritation
Your eyes has got inflaamation.keep washing your eyes with cold water and avoid rubbing ,may damage cornea .It can be treated with antibiotic drops.
Many Thanks,
Dr Shilpi
