Should Sex Be Avoided While Having Positive HPV Result?

Hi, I m a 56 year old woman divorced since 2011 and had 2 sexual partners after (not at the same time) and now with my current partner for the past 18 months and in a serious relationship. A few days ago (07/15) I had my obgyn cytology test and came out HPV positive so I was recommended to have a colposcopy. Question - since I was with my current partner, I ve had oral sex quite often than when I was married. Should I now avoid that and having sexual intercourse I m just scared about my health especially last year I was diagnosed with Stage 2 TNBC - finished with my radiation Jul 2015 (no chemo) and all my mammograms thereafter are normal. I m pretty healthy - labs normal and I work out 4 days a week and in good shape at my age. I m in a panic mode now since I found out about the cytology results. I have my colposcopy for Aug 2 - please advise. Thank you very much.

Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
HPV is an STI that can be transmitted through oral, vaginal or anal sex with an infected person. It may not have any treatment, but healing in some cases is spontaneous. It can cause genital warts, cervical/anal cancer and oropharyngeal cancers. There may be no test to test your partner for HPV, but you being infected suggest the two of you may be having the virus.I will not ask you to avoid sexual intercourse. You just need to stay healthy, eat well and balanced and your system will fight the infection. You will also need to do other STI test like HIV since it is an infection that can weaken your system and predispose you to developing symptoms of HPV or its complication. You will need to do your colposcopy and get regular checks by your Doctor to identify any complication before it become serious.
Hope my answer will help you
Best regards
