Should I Consult A Doctor As My Daughter's Finger Is Swelling And Turning Black And Blue As A Nail Got Stuck In Her Hand?

My 12 year old daughter got a nail stuck in her hand ( on the pad at the bottom of the index finger). We soaked it in soap and water and put antibiotic cream on it. Im pretty sure she is up to date on her shots. But it is swelling and the finger is turning black and blue. She also says she can't staighten it because it hurts so bad. Can I wait to see her doctor tommorrow?

Hi. Thanks for posting your concern at HCM.

I would keep a possibility of bacterial infection of the wound.

In such a case i would have advised an oral antibiotic (penicillin group OR Cephalosporin group) for a week because topical antibiotic sometimes cannot reach at the depth of infection and is therefore not effective if used alone.

Continue with topical antibacterial cream twice daily along with the oral antibiotic.

An OTC pain killer like ibuprofen once or twice daily would help with the pain and swelling

take care
