Should Ganglion Cysts Present On The Fingers Be Drained?

Hello, I have a basic question that I need to as about a ganglion cyst that is on my thumb and one on the finger next the thumb. It does not hurt anything like that. However, I am busy retired government employee who exercises 5 days a week. Should be drained or removed before it causes me some problems later on. Thanks, I am just asking.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
A ganglion cyst is a tumor or swelling which is benign (non-cancerous) and i present usually on top of a joint or the covering of a tendon. It looks like a sac of liquid (cyst) located just under the skin. Inside the cyst would be a thick, sticky, clear, colorless, jellylike material.
Ganglion cyst(s) are generally harmless does not need any form of treatment unless one has significant trauma repeatedly or discomfort arising out of it. It can be left alone as it is harmless.
Many ganglion cysts can disappear without any treatment at all. In case it needs removal, it needs to be done by means of aspiration or by surgical excision.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
