ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi. In my opinion you should still take him and show him to a doctor preferably an ENT specialist.

The tubes that were put in your son's ear in 2011 would have been expelled by now and the eardrum would have healed. This injury by the Q-tip may have injured the eardrum or the ear canal and that explains why he was in pain for a few minutes. With little children it is difficult to assess if there has been a decrease in hearing after the injury and therefore needs to be looked into incase there has been drum damage. In addition the injury can precipitate an infection and it is important to know the nature of injury in order to prevent an infection. For instance, if it is an eardrum injury, care must be taken to ensure no water enters the ears since that can precipitate a middle ear infection.

For now, keep his ear dry and do not allow entry of water in the ears and watch for any increase in pain or development of fever till you show him to an ENT specialist.
