Should Ezetimibe Be Taken If One Has A History Of Depression?

My doctor has prescribed me Ezetimibe and one of the side effects of this medication is depressed mood. This concerns me because I have a history of depression. My doctor is aware of my history and my concern. Should I be concerned with this medication?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

If you've had severe depression (particularly with suicide ideation) then there are some concerns as this drug may cause or worsen pre-existing depression in approximately 1 out of 20 patients using it. The good thing is that stopping the drug, reverses the worsening. In any case you should be closely monitored by your doctor and consider alternatives if new symptoms occur.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
