My grandmother is 87 yrs old, in okay health, still active and goes. She started having swelling in her knee approximately 4-6 month ago. It s been diagnosed as Arthritis. The pain meds have helped a little but it seems like something else. She had xrays last week and by this weekend the pain is intense and the knee is huge. Also she has a strange odor coming from her. She bathes, yet it seems like it s coming from her pours. Could there possibly be an infection in her knee that is making her smell?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history about your grandmother having two distinct problems as per the history you have provided.
1. The problem in the knee looks to be due to severe osteoarthritis and I would advise you the following: First of all, get an MRI of the knee done to get the proper diagnosis so that we can decide the further management. She may need an Orthroscopy and and sos procedure, If required she may need knee replacement.
2. Smell from the ear has nothing to do with the knee problems. This can be due to the infection in the ear, and need an examination y an ENT to know the exact reasons and to get a proper treatment. She will be fine then.
