Pregnant. What Is The Likelihood Of Going Beyond Due Date?

I m awaiting the birth of my second grandchild, and am wondering what the likelihood is that my daughter will go beyond her due date of Feb. 20. Just wondering how often that happens. (Trying to make plane reservations to go to her!) :-) What s typical? Haven t been on this website before. Must I pay to get your answer? Don t know.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi! Thank you for your query and welcome to HCM. Your questions posted in the public forum will be answered for free by any of our experts.

First of all, congratulations to you and your family for another bundle of joy! Now, to answer you, the accuracy of pregnancy due dates largely depend on how early the first ultrasound of your daughter was done. The earlier the ultrasound in the first trimester, the more accurate the dating is.

But, no matter how accurate the dating is, we really cannot say if the baby comes out at that specific time. It really is just an estimate of the date of delivery. It will happen when it is supposed to. To give you some statistics, studies show that majority of women give birth spontaneously between the 38th to 40th weeks. About a third of the women gave birth two weeks after the estimated due date.

I hope I was able to answer your concerns. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Congratulations again and take care!
