Hi, I have a question. I just delivered a baby girl yesterday and she been in ICU over night for not being able go control her breathing . Well I received her the next morning at 9 and she has been fine since she left the monitor. Around 2:30 nurse came in and said that her blood work came back saying she has Cocci and they had to go do another blood test on her to see if it comes back positive or negative. What is Cocci? I never even heard of that word before. Please help!

Hi mom,
Congratulation for your baby girl's arrival.
Cocci are the bacteria or germs which are spherical in shape. There are several types of these germs and the final diagnosis will be made once full blood culture report in out. At this age so called GBS (group B strep ) is the most common germ to infect tiny newborn babies in early days of life.
It is a treatable bacteria with a course of antibiotic injections which can last from 10-14 days.
Hope i could clarify enough to relieve your anxiety.
Wish her a speedy recovery.

Pediatrician Dr. E Venkata Ramana's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Cocci are bacteria which are called Group B streptococci which are associated with the early neonatal infections leading to sepsis in newborns due to their vulnerability to infections because of low immunity.

If the tests or blood cultures are positive for it, the child will require appropriate antibiotic therapy for 1 week to 10 days to treat the infection.

Nothing to worry and this condition is a common problem in newborns and can be treated with medication.

Therefore I advise you to discuss with the treating doctor and clarify your apprehension.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.

Dear Sir/Madam
Welcome to Healthcare magic
Greetings of the day
Normally blood culture is done as workup for neonate with breathing difficulty to rule out sepsis as cause, cocci are bacteria which have been grown from neonate blood denoting positive blood culture which can be treated with antibiotics. dont worry as long as breathing of baby is normal and feeding well without any fuctuation n body temperature.
Regards
