My Mother Is In An Retirement Home And Has Type

My mother is in an retirement home and has type 2 diabetes, taking insulin shots for many years. New doctor put her on metformin a month ago and said confusion, acting like she's intoxicated, etc., but he said he's never known this drug to cause those reactions. He thinks she has dementia. When I google the medicine, it says confusion, acting intoxicated, etc., can be side effects. She acts like she's doped up now, doesn't recognize myself or my brother and finding it hard to finish a thought. She had a stroke @ 10 years ago but was doing okay until recently. Very concerned about this med. No insulin shots would be nice but not if she is almost always in another world.
