My Husband Waited Until We Got Home To Pee Around

My husband waited until we got home to pee around 5pm, and had waited too long and was about to bust. Since then is having pain in his groin and in the last hour it has moved to his side/back like it is kidney pain. He thinks he needs to urinate and when he tries to go, it is relief, but the pain and urge returns in minutes.
Separately, he has had vomiting and diarrhea starting at 6pm, which we thought was probably food poisoning from undercooked chicken at lunchtime. That has now abated, but the pain is still extreme in his left side/back/kidney area. Never had a kidney stone before. No fever, chills are associated with it.
Any ideas?
