My Husband Had A Heart Attack Almost Three Years Ago

My husband had a heart attack almost three years ago and is being treated in our town. They have implanted a heart loop recorder. Recently, they called and said that his heart had stopped for 9 seconds. They took him off all his blood pressure meds (his bp was normal prior to the heart attack). Since that time, they say it has stopped for 3 seconds. My questions are:
9 seconds seems very substantial to me. Should I invest in a home AED?
Would an AED be effective for that type of heart stoppage?
If this continues, will a pacemaker be the next step? Or will a defib be the next step?
It scares me unbelievably because we have been married 43 great years and I don't want to be without my hubby. HELP!
