My dad is 88 years old and suffered depression for the first time after being a caregiver to my mother who suffers from bipolar disorder and is 92. He was put on Lezapro ( he did not want to take meds but the Dr convinced him. After 6weeks he was rushed to the Er with symptoms that resembled a stroke ( lost control of his legs and garbled speech) After all the testing came out negative including a CT scan it was decided that he was having a reaction to the Lexapro. His Dr stopped the lexapro without a taper and several days later he was back in the hospital . His legs gave out completely and he was unresponsive for 45 min . Another hospital trip negative results and Physical rehab for 2 weeks. His withdrawal sypmtoms have included severe fatigue, constant sleepiness, bizarre dreams, confused thinking, depersonalization psychomotor retardation, weakness, trouble walking... in waves and windows. He was beginning to make progress and then after the death of his brother, he had a huge setback. His symptoms are back in full force. It has been 3 months since this all started. What to do? Can't get any help. Since this Lexapro he has lost his independence and has become incontinent( that was starting to improve until this last wave last week) this is not only taking a toll on him but on me and my sisters. Do you know a specialist who deals with SSRI withdrawals and the elderly or can you give us some advice as to how we can minimize and lessen the sypmtoms? When will they end?
