My Dad Had Heart Bypass Surgery 7 Years Ago And

My dad had heart bypass surgery 7 years ago and he takes metoprolol for his blood pressure. At his last check-up his heart rate was in the fifties and his doctor prescribed slow release metoprolol to fix the slow rate, but we're concerned that it could actually lower his heart rate instead. My question is, could there be a better medication for him?
