Is Sharp Pain Across The Sternum Of An Elderly Person A Concerning Matter?
My Mom currently 78 has been told she has Lupus does not take any meds for this has been having sudden onsets of sharp pain on right side under breast towards outer rib cage across from sternum Will not be seeing her Dr until the end of the month Should I be concerned?
That might be as a result of lupus as she is a defaulter and disease might have advanced. Lung involvement often is caused by inflammation of the covering of the heart (pericardium) and lungs (pleura). When these structures become inflammed, patients may develop chest pain, irregular heartbeat (arrhythmias) and accumulation of fluid around the lungs (pleuritis or pleurisy) and heart (pericarditis). The heart valves and the lung itself can also be affected by the primary disease lupus, resulting in pain chest or shortness of breath. She needs proper evaluation in the form of x-ray chest, ECG, ECHO, ANA Titre, ESR and possibly a CT Scan of the chest. Please visit her clinician for further evaluation and management and hope that she would be compliant this time.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
