Is Withdrawal Of Levothyroxine Advisable At An Elderly Age?

Is it safe for an 86 yr old to stop levothyroxine 88 mcg,. It was prescribed after one blood test showing a slightly elevated tsh. since taking it her tsh levels have been normal but she has lost a lot of hair and nails are not growing nearly as before. She has been taking it for 1 yr. She is not seeing an endocrinologist and her pcp said she could just stop, even tho she did not recommend it. In general will it cause harm to stop suddenly with this low does or is it important that she does it gradually?. Please feel free to elaborate and thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns. I would not recommending stopping thyroid replacement therapy. By stopping the medication she could become hypothyroid again and cause heart damage. I recommend that she continue taking her medication and have her thyroid profiles rechecked every 6 months. She can see her regular doctor she does not need an endocrinologist
