Is There Anything To Be Done To Reduce The Pain And Swelling On The Right Leg Hurt While Playing?

Hi, my friend was playing soccer today and he crashed into another soccer player. His right leg started swelling about and now he has a big bump on his right leg, above the knee. What could this mean? Is there anything he can do to reduce the pain and swelling? He already tried icing it. Also he says it is pretty big pain to the point where he can't even walk. Could it be serious?

Hi. Welcome to HCM. Knee problems are of no surprise for soccer players. Ball handling, quick stops, directional changes as well as long periods of running place high amounts of stress on the joint and the soft tissue around knee. Their are four major ligaments in knee and injury to these ligaments are common among soccer players. Going with your description of pain and swelling it appears for me that your friends knee in injured badly with involving one of these ligaments. He has problem in walking also. Usually orthopedicians advice R.I.C.E for mild knee injuries it means "rest, ice, compression, and elevation." Rest the knee by staying off it or walking only with crutches. Apply ice to control swelling. Use a compressive elastic bandage applied snugly, but loosely enough so that it does not cause pain. Finally, keep the knee elevated. In your case it wont subside with this. I STRONGLY ADVICE to consult an orthopedician as soon as possible, because if any ligamental tear has happened then u are making it worse by walking on that leg. Dont waste time and go to a orthopedician. Tell your friend to have complete bed rest till the consulattion. Wish u good health.
