My only one kid, daughter, age 1 year old,7.7 kg at the time of the diagnosis on June 4,2011 was diagnosed with a very large 20mm FOSSA OVALIS SEPTAL DEFECT WITH LEFT TO RIGHT SHUNT,RA AND RV dilated deficient margins.with mild hyperkinetic pulmonary artery hyper tension and the doctor has advised for an elective surgic closure. Her mother died after two days of delivery due to CHD,left to right shunt breathing problem and all.My kid s mothers family has a long history of cardiac problems almost for three generations.Since she is the only kid for me i am afraid, tensed and a huge lot worried about my kids open heart surgery, can you please tell me if this surgery is gonna be complicated, dangerous?will i get my kid back in a very healthy condition??/please somebody respond soon.she is just one year old.Joe

Hi.... I understand your concern. Your kid definitely needs surgical correction of the heart disease which she is having. The other options like device closure might not be feasible in her case as hole is large. Now a days heart surgery has become very advanced many kids are being granted new life after the surgery and they are leading a very normal life. I suggest that you go ahead with the surgery and if you are still in doubt you can get a second opinion from another pediatric cardiologist.
