Is Taking Oxycodone Advisable While On Novolog And Levemir For Diabetes?

Can a 77 year old who has had well-controlled Type 2 diabetes (controlled via Novolog and Levemir injections - no oral diabetic medications) for over 30 years take oxycodone safely for two weeks after knee replacement surgery? It has been a little over a week since the surgery and I am progressing well except for high blood glucose readings. I am having to take almost twice the units of Novolog and Levemir than I usually take. I have also been taking Tramadol, Lovenox, and Colace since I was released from the hospital. All of these prescription drugs were to be taken for only two weeks after my release from the hospital (and none are refillable). Thanks in advance for your answer.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, Welcome to As a doctor services. I have read your query.

You have a history of Type 2 diabetes but you have kept it well controlled with Novolog & Levemir. You had knee replacement surgery & have been prescribed with Oxycodone.

It is good to know that you are progressing well except for high blood glucose readings.

Oxycodone, is an opioid(narcotic) analgesic prescribed to you for relieve of moderate to severe pan after knee replacement surgery. Research shows Oxycodone may cause hyperglycemia. You can talk to your treating surgeon/ physician about it.

Oxycodone should not be taken for a longer period as it is habit forming(addictive). You can talk to your doctor & keep the dose to a minimum or take some other analgesic that suits you better.

Hope I have answered your question. Take care.

Dr Nupur K
