Is swelling in the ankle a symptom of a torn peroneal tendon?

Fell off a ladder in January or February of this year and thought I sprained my left ankle. Still sore, still swollen, still discolored. Sometimes when I walk there is a popping sensation and noise. Did I tear a peroneal tendon or do I wait longer because I am 67 and things don t heal as quickly as they used to?

Hi. welcome to "Ask A Doctor" service. I have read your question and here is my advice.
Infact If there is still swelling and bruises , not only pain then in think it's better to get an MRI of the foot done. Though it might be only strain but if the swelling is still there after such a long time in would advise you should get it cheked to be sure we don't miss anything serious .

Hopes I have answered your question. I will be glad to answer any further question about this.
kind Regards
Dr Rahman.

Inside of left ankle slightly towards the toes is a small swelling. Five months ago, after a lot of walking including side hills, the ankle was very swollen. Visited specialist and advice was wear a boot for two months and then a brace. Swelling way down after quiet slow winter. Did some PT and then started walking program. Yesterday played golf. No pain. The area is a little swollen. Not symmetric with right inside ankle. Could this be tendinitis, or is a foot bone a little off kilter? More X-rays or wait and see the foot reacts to more gentle exercise?

Hello all there! I am having continuous mild dull ache and lil swelling on my left ankle since 2008. I ignored it as it is not stopping me from my routine but now I wanna do something about it. There is tenderness just behind malleolus. I checked, it is peroneal tendon (longus or brevis) problem, may be tear as my whole peroneal muscle is sore. Surgery is advised. Is there any alternative to avoid surgery as I wont be able to take rest for weeks which is desired after surgery. Ayurvedic or physiotherapy will be better.

I had a fracture in left ankle and had surgery this past April. after a few physical therapies, ankle locked--I was crippled for months--no doctor knew what to do, but one. I had surgery in August and October: a three inch bone fragment was removed from ankle joint, torn deltoid ligament and torn tibial tendon repaired in August. Then in October, hardware was removed as I told metal plate was wrong for my foot; peroneal nerve area cleaned up and above all:ankle joint reset cause evidently it was tipped on an angle. Much to my new surgeon s and doctor s surprise--by November 11th I was walking and swimming and really had Pt since mid October. everything was progressing--then this past week--limping and now my ankle is locked again. It is not swelling or inner stitches still dissolving--it s locked. The good, new surgeon is on his way to India for a medical mission trip and I feel by now--I need another opinion, but hardly any doctors know about locked ankles.
