General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi

Unlike bone or muscle,Cartilage once repaired or damaged cannot be healed with drugs alone.Excessively damaged cartilage may require surgical treatment in most cases.I would recommend you to take chondroprotective agents like chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine to improve cartilage condition until permanent treatment with surgery. These supplements can be used along with pain killers for 4 to 6 weeks.Follow up with your treating orthopedician is also essential.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
