General & Family Physician, Dr. Priyanka's Response
Hi,
Varicocele is a condition in which the veins in the testicle become enlarged and twisted, which can cause reduced sperm quality and quantity. Surgery to correct varicocele is known as varicocelectomy. While varicocelectomy can improve sperm parameters, it is not always necessary.
Your friend should consult a specialist in male infertility, such as a urologist or a reproductive endocrinologist, to determine if surgery is the best course of action. Factors that may influence the decision to undergo varicocelectomy include the severity of the varicocele, the quality of the sperm, and other underlying fertility issues. In any case, I would recommend a consultation with an expert in the field.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
