Is Stabbing Pain In Abdomen During Pregnancy A Type Of Uterine Contraction?

im 39 weeks pregnant was told by my midwife yesterday that i was 3 cm dilated and thing have started but waters have not broken..Ive been having contractions roughly every hour since then starting at the lower back then coming forward to belly.. just now i had a sharp like stabbing pain at the front of my belly is this a diferent type of contraction??? Im 37 years old and this is my 1st baby. regards Nina

Hi,
Sudden stabbing pain of the sort you have described could be due to fetal movement. From the findings described, you seem to have entered into labor. As this is your first pregnancy, you may take sometime to proceed into active labor. Active labor is indicated by increase in the frequency and intensity of contractions with pain radiating down to the thighs associated with slight spotting or 'show' and leakage of membranes. Please see your consultant for further management. Wish you safe motherhood.
