Is Spotting A Symptoms Of Pregnancy?

Hello! My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for the last 3 months. My typical period starts my spotting brown (old-looking) blood for about 2 days before I start a flow, I then have 2 heavy days of bleeding, and 3 light days. Well to get to the point, Last month I only bled for 2 days! and stopped there wasn't any spotting before or after my period. I took several hpts and they have all been negative. Now this month comes along and I am due to start my period tomorrow. I started spotting brown blood (only when wiping) 1 week ago today. Every day there has been spotting and this has never happened before. I just don't understand how or why I have been spotting for so long. I took a hpt yesterday and of course it was negative. So what is your advise on this? Could I be pregnant?

Hi there.
After reading your question, I am of the opinion that:
1) You need to wait for at least 3 days of your missed periods and then get a home pregnancy test. Sometimes, it even takes longer to become positive.
2) Spotting and discharge could be due to either impending periods or could be implantation bleeding.
3) If you want to find out sooner, you can get a blood test called serum beta HCG done which can give a positive result earlier.
4) My suggestion is that you wait for five days, and then get a urine pregnancy test. If that is negative, you can do the blood test or an ultrasonography.
5) If there is persistent brown discharge, you must get a vaginal examination to rule out local causes like vaginal or cervical infection. You might also require a pap smear, endometrial biopsy and ultrasound if this spotting does not go.

I hope this was helpful.

Dr. Shikha Shah
