Is Severe Back Pain Due To A Delay In Changing The Fentanyl Patch?

My mother has chronic pain and is on 50 fentynal patch. She lives in a memory care facility. They failed to change her patch on time and it was over due about 30 hrs. before I caught the mistake. She seemed very agitated than usual and was complaining of severe back pain. Was this due to the patch being late.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

For a patient with a chronic pain, the pain killer is very important for his well being and his quality of life. To answer to your question:Yes,in my opinion, the missed dosis or not changing in time the patch of fentanyl is the the most possible cause of your mother s actual new symptoms.
