Is Red Yeast Rice Supplement A Statin Drug?

i am not interested in taking prescription statins. my doctor ask me to take red yeast rice and I am concerned because he called it a statin. is it save I am 78 yrs. old also the bottle says to not take with grapefruit. Please comment. thank you

A newer statin called Lovastatin is isolated from red yeast and thus red yeast has got potential to reduce blood cholesterol.
