Is Rabies Transmission Possible Through Chlorinated Water?

So, there is a bat clinging to the side of the pool. It is mid-day. It is licking itself off perhaps because it got waterlogged. But if it is sick and had rabies and was in the pool, could the virus be transmitted by swimming in chlorinated water? What if you accidentally drank the water?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The virus of Rabies is spread through the saliva of infected animals. Infected animals can spread the virus by biting another animal or a person.

In rare cases, rabies can be spread when infected saliva gets into an open wound or the mucous membranes, such as the mouth or eyes.

This could occur if an infected animal were to lick an open cut on your skin. The rabies virus does not live in the pool. The relatively high concentration of chlorine in the pool water would inactivate the virus.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
