Is Prophylactic Mastectomy Without Reconstruction Advisable?
Is I am 61 yr old female with extensive maternal history of breast & ovarian cancer. Recently was genetically tested for BRCA2. Results positive. Have been advised by 5 different Dr s to go with protocol, hysterectomy & mastectomy/reconstruction. My issue is the reconstruction. I have already had ovaries & tubes removed. Leaving the uterus because of my anatomy, recovery etc. Went through menopause @ age 40. Did not do hormone replacement. I suffer from anxiety & don t think I can deal with every 6 months of screening. Know not a lot of research of women over 60 having mastectomy being the best course but cannot deal w/stress of waiting. I have had 2 abnormal benign lumps, biopsies & nowhave marker in R breast. Also have had high WBC counts for the last eight years & am on a 4 month observation blood work. No difinitentive answers. Not high enough for bone marrow testing but yet something is going on. My choice after 6 months of research is to have prophylactic mastectomy with no reconstruction. Thoughts or advice ?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
I suppose the reconstruction part is merely cosmetic, to my knowledge this does not affect risk of cancer. Bilateral mastectomy without reconstruction seems like a good choice.
