Is Prolonged Ear Infection With Partial Hearing Loss And Numbness A Cause For Concern?

On Dec 25th I developed an ear infection that penetrated my ear drum, Jan 5th I still have partial hearing loss and my outer ear is numb. I'm inquiring if I should still be experiencing the hearing loss and numbness or I should see a specialist. I am 24 male

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain severe ear infection can lead to perforation of ear drum and inflammation and infection is the cause of numbness in the outer ear..
As ruptured ear drum is a cause of concern you should consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like Otoscopic examination of ear, audiometry etc can help in diagnosis and treatment can be planned accordingly.
As you have an ear infection the first treatment that will be given to you is resolve the infection and for this you will be advised a course of antibiotics like Augmentin, anti-inflammatory painkillers, decongestants oral as well as nasal drops.
You will be given antibiotic ear drops..
In case if the perforation is small it will get healed gradually as the infection will subside..
In case if the perforation is large and does not get better then Tympanoplasty will be advised.
In case if you get recurring ear infections Pressure Equalization tubes that will maintain a proper pressure on both sides of ear and will ease in drainage will also be advised..
