Is Prolonged And Heavy Vaginal Bleeding A Symptom Of Menopause?

I am 46 years of age and up until this current month have gotten my minstrel cycle normally at least 75 percent of the time. Normal issue would always be either to late or to early, regardless, I got it. In the last few months however, i have noticed my cycle last longer than what I consider to be normal. Normal for me is about 3-4 days. It had increased to be almost 7 days from beginning to end. This past weekend, I started spotting and have been since Saturday, there is no normal flow of bleeding. I have also noticed, in the toilet after wiping there are pink colored strips that look to be like tissue but it s not the tissue I m wiping with. What could this be? I am not sexually active and have not been for years. Could this be the beginning stage of menopause?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Based on the description of the symptoms, it appears that you are going in for menopause. Some of them experience such symptoms before the menstrual period stops completely. This is mainly due to hormonal changes taking place in the body. Hence there is nothing much to be worried about. Be in healthy diet, moderate exercise and drink good quantities of fluids.
However, since there are few conditions which could present like this, it would be ideal for you to undergo per speculum examination and ultrasound scan of abdomen to make sure about it.
In case, this continues for long and becomes bothersome, you may need hormonal supplementation for certain amount of period to have control over it. This needs to be evaluated and treatment needs to be instituted on consultation with Gynecologist.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
