Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a skyla iud inside me and it expired November 24th but I have not removed it. I also haven’t had me period since the end of November. Could I be pregnant? I took 2 hpt and both were negative.. but something seems wrong or different about my body
I think that you are not pregnant. If you go to Skyla official website you will notice that the producer says: "Skyla expires two years after manufacturing but it may remain inserted for three years after the date of insertion and must be removed and replaced after three years". It means that even after expiration date Skyla continues to release hormones preventing pregnancy, and these amounts should protect you from being pregnant.
Recent studies suggest that IUDs provide women with a sufficient amount of hormones preventing pregnancy even after their expiration date (for at least one year after official expiration date). The rate of pregnancy among women continuing to use the IUDs up to six months after their expiration date was less than 1% (that is, the same risk of optimal use of IUD). In addition, the fact that two home pregnancy test has resulted in negative supports the idea that you are not pregnant. Maybe you are just too stressed out and that is why the period did not come yet.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Ervin Toçi
