Is Playing Football Advisable While Having Intermittent Nosebleeds?

Hi. My Son had suffered with nose bleeds, but hasn t had one for over 3 months. He had an appointment with the hospital this morning (as it had taken 2 months to get the appointment through). Even though he had not had a nose bleed for a while we thought we would keep the appointment just to check there was no other problems, which we now know there isn t. The Doctor insisted on cauterization but after he told my Son NO exercise for 6 weeks. He is extremely upset as he has a football match today and is in a football academy where he plays and trains every day. My question is (1) is this length of time off necessary and (2) what will happen if he does continue to play football

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your doctor would have advised cauterization as he must have noticed fragile blood vessels in the area called 'Little's area' in the nose, which is the primary site of nose bleed. He has also advised no exercise as physical activity will raise heart beat and blood pressure temporarily, which could have an impact on fragile blood vessels and precipitate bleeding. I would advise to follow your doctor's advice strictly and not to participate in playing football or any other such physical activities. Once he undergoes proper treatment and recovers completely, he can go ahead with all the physical activities.

Hope the information provided helps.
All the best.
