Is Persistent Pain Around The Incision Site Post Liver Abscess Drainage Normal?

I had a liver abcess drainage done over three weeks ago . However, I still have pain on my right side. The incision was about three inches above my bellybutton. It is not a pain in my stomach but it feels like a paper cut and when my shirt touches my skin it hurts. I had a rash where the tape and gauze was placed but the rash has since cleared up. ( I am allergic to latex but they did not use any latex bandages.) The pain is an area about three inches long and two inches wide right near the incision. It feels like it is just under the skin.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history of liver abscess drainage through incision which is being painful as you have well explained.
The commonest cause of the local pain at the incision site, with rash that has subsided but pains on touching indicates the following reasons:
Nerve trauma or entrapment in the scar can cause such pains.
Local infection in the wound site.
Hypertrophy of the scar.
This can be diagnosed by the following ways:
Examination by a General Surgeon.
Ultrasonography of the area.
Tests of blood.
All this will lead to a proper diagnosis giving a plan of management.
Till the do the following:
Take an anti-inflammatory medication.
Local gauze dressing with soothing agents so that touch does not instigate the pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
