Is Open Heart Surgery The Only Treatment To Repair Leakage In Valve?

I am 66 years old and have had a valve repair and icd implant. Sometimes I feel like I am just dragging myself to do things like work in the yard or even to go shopping for a fair amount of time. My cardiologist has been keeping an eye on me and I have an echocardiogram every time I go.(every 6 mos.) He said I am having some more leakage. Would I have to have open heart surgery again if I had to have my valve replaced?

Hi,

Open heart surgery is not the only treatment to repair leakage in a valve. There are different treatments available depending on the severity and cause of the valve leakage. Some less invasive treatments may include medication to manage symptoms, or a minimally invasive procedure to repair or replace the valve, such as transcatheter valve replacement or repair.

Whether or not you would need open heart surgery again to replace your valve would depend on the specific details of your case. Your cardiologist would need to evaluate the severity of the leakage, the condition of your heart, and other factors to determine the best course of action. A minimally invasive procedure may be an option for you, but it's also possible that open heart surgery may be necessary.

It's important to continue working closely with your cardiologist and following their recommendations for managing your condition. They will be able to provide you with more specific information and guidance on what to expect moving forward. Additionally, if you are feeling fatigued and having difficulty with everyday activities, it's important to let your cardiologist know so they can evaluate your symptoms and adjust your treatment plan if needed.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
