Hi,

Azathioprine or mercaptopurine usually takes between 6 weeks and 3 months to become fully effective. During that time, you may need to take corticosteroids to maintain control of your disease. Azathioprine has been used for about 30 years for the treatment of IBD. Common side effects include:
* upset stomach
* nausea
* vomiting
* diarrhea
* loss of appetite
* hair loss, or
* skin rash

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ajeet Singh, General & Family Physician
