Is Low Pulse Rate While On A Beta Blocker A Cause For Concern?

I HAVE BEEN PRESCRIBED A BETA BLOKER FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE. I HAVE BEEN TAKING IT FOR TWO DAYS AND MY PULSE RATE WHEN I SIT OR STOP GOES TO 42 - 47. I TAKE 50MG AT 7 AM. MY BLOOD PRESSURE WAS 160 / 98 REGULARLY SO WE ARE TRYING THIS TO BRING IT DOWN. SHOULD I VISIT MY GP TO CORRECT THE PULSE RATE. I ALSO COMPETE IN TRIATHLONS AND AM NOT TRAINING AT PRESENT, ONLY WALKING APPROXIMATELY 2 KM.

Hi,

Beta-blocker can lead to decreased heart rate. It is advisable that you discuss this with your physician and switch it to a different antihypertensive. You have mentioned that you are an athlete and athletes tend to have a low heart rate which is completely normal. Though it would be better to rule out any other causes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
