Is Leukemia A Hereditary Disease?

my brother was diagnosed with mds about three months ago and he is now receiving chemotherapy treatments. he is 76 and has been a smoker for about 50 years. i am 66 and never smoked. i also have t1 diabetes since 1955 and in very good shape. our grandfather was diagnosed with leukemia in about 1960 and he lived another 5 years after that. my question is if leukemia is hereditery? thanks, scott

Hi,
Most cases of leukemia are not believed to be hereditary, but certain genetic mutations and conditions can be passed along to offspring that increase the chances of developing leukemia.
