Is It Safe To Take Tryptophan For Mild Depression And Anxiety?

Is it safe to take tryptophan for mild depression and moderate anxiety? I am trying to avoid traditional prescription anti-depressants because of the side effects. I tend to not deal with certain issues when I have been on them in the past and therefore the issues continue when I go off of them. (I haven t taken anything except Prn xxanax the past 4 years). I am also in counseling for some past issues and trying to work through them. That being said, at times more recently, I get stuck on certain thoughts and I feel like I need something to help me relax. Because of the anxiety I am fearful that tryptophan will harm me. Your input is greatly appreciated!
