Is It Safe To Take Flucloxacillin And Indomethacin For Gout On Foot?

Hi, I am on antibiotics for a skin break in my foot which had become infected. I believe I have now have gout in the same foot, I have had gout before and recognise the symptoms. The antibiotics are Flucloxacillin and I have some old Indometacin tablets for treating gout. Can I take the two together or I am better served taking some painkillers and seeing my GP in the morning. Regards David

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is generally not recommended to take Flucloxacillin and Indomethacin together without consulting a healthcare provider. Flucloxacillin is an antibiotic and Indomethacin is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) commonly used for the treatment of gout. Both medications can have potential side effects, and taking them together can increase the risk of adverse reactions, such as stomach bleeding, kidney problems, and increased risk of blood clotting.

It's best to consult your doctor before taking any new medication, especially if you are already on antibiotics for a skin infection. Your doctor may want to evaluate your symptoms and consider alternative treatments or adjust the doses of your current medications to minimize any potential risks.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
