Is It Safe To Take Cholest-Ex While On Atenolol For BP?

I have been taking Cholest-Ex for about 2 months. It is a herbal Supplement from Botanic Choice. What is your opinion about taking this supplement? I take atenol for high blood pressure. I couldn t take statins because they bothered my stomach. I am 59 years old, 5 ft. and I weigh 145 pounds.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome to HCM.

The safety & efficacy of Cholest-Ex in reducing the raised cholesterol and other lipids are not being proved.

As claimed Cholest-Ex supports healthy cholesterol, triglycerides, and lipid leves & encourages healthy blood flow in the arteries. it is a herbal nutritional supplement which has not been proved to be safe and effective in the treatment high cholesterol or other lipids on any large multicentric clinical trials hence FDA has not approved its use to reduce cholesterol or other lipid levels.

If you are not comfortable with Statins ( because of stomach upset) there are other medications which do not cause stomach problem yet effective and safe in reducing the high cholesterol levels like Ezetimibe or Fibrates.

Since you have a high BP and taking Atenolol your high cholesterol should also be reduced to decrease the risk of heart disease.

I advise you to consult your treating doctor for an alternate but safer cholesterol lowering drug other than Statins.

Hope to have answered your query.
