Is It Safe To Pierce Umbilicus During Pregnancy?

I am 24 weeks pregnant. I have a pierced belly button and I put a special maternity bar in some time ago. In the past couple of days I have noticed that the top hole is a little sore and red, but doesn t seem to be infected. I have cleaned it with the usual salt water, but want to know whether it would be best to take it out?

Dear Madam,

The very fact that the upper puncture is sore and red suggests that it is infected. Salt is an antiseptic material hence you felt better after a salt water cleaning. However, so long as the foreign body is present in the holes, risk of reinfection does exist. So I would suggest you:
1. Remove that bar from your skin.
2. Take a course of antibiotics.
3. Get it properly cleaned by antiseptic solutions and apply some good antiseptic/antibiotics cream over the wound.
4. Please report to your Obstetrician.
5. If you have already not taken, take injection od tetanus toxoid.

Please do not ignore the infection lest risk of spreading through the blood to the body and even risk to the baby.

I hope you take the advice seriously.
