Is It Normal To Pass A Clot As Big As My Fist While Bleeding After A D&C?

Hello, I had a D&C done to terminate a pregnancy, Tuesday Jan 14 2014, I felt fine and the bleeding has stopped by Thursday, but as of yesterday, the cramping has been severe and feels like I am having active labor contractions, the bleeding is really heavy and I passed a clot the size of my fist, not sure if this is normal or not.

OBGYN 's  Response
hi,
Thanks for the query.
Little bit of spotting is common after undergoing D&C.
After undergoing D&C sometimes retained products may remain inside the uterus.
And they can lead to pain abdomen and bleeding.
Intrauterine infection is one more possible cause for pain and bleeding.
So, if the pain is persisting and bleeding is continuous, better to consult gynecologist once.
Get examined and go for ultrasound.
Ultrasound helps in ruling out the possibility of retained products and/or infection.
Then depending on the findings further management can be planned.
If there are no retained products or infection, antifibrinolytic drugs may be sufficient in treating the problem.
Take care.
