Is It Normal To Have Slurred Speech After Taking Pain Medication?

My 87 year old mother fell and broke her leg, facial bones and hand. She is in the hospital and they are giving her pain medication but when we talk to her she doesn't make sense, speech is slurred and this has been going on for two weeks. Is this normal>

As far as my knowledge is concerned, there is no direct correlation between the pain medications and slurring of speech. Development of slurred speech in a previously normal adult is considered as abnormal and might be due to some underlying pathology.

I suspect that your mother might have developed slurring of speech due to some neurological derangement. A detailed clinical examination by a Neurophysician will be helpful in arriving at a possible diagnosis.
