Is It Normal To Experience Heavy Bleeding During Periods After Intercourse?

hello. so i just had sex for the first time on april 16. my last period was march 31 and lasted about 7 days. today i got my period and i am having the normal cramps that i usually do. however, my period has a very light flow this time and the blood is bright red. usually when i am on my period my blood is darker and i have a heavier flow. is there something wrong with me? and is it directly correlated to me having sex?

Hello,

You had sex for the first time and have got your periods. Your periods are bright red and very light flow. It should not be of any concern if you had protected sex. You are suggested to have protected sex if you are not planning for a baby. If you are not on regular CP, not on condoms and not taking emergency CP after unprotected sex will increase your chances of getting pregnant.

You can take a pregnancy test with the first morning midstream urine in case you develop early symptoms of pregnancy. This is to stay on the safer side. You should consult your health care provider for the contraceptive device that would be suitable for you. Contraceptive devices do not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases. You should use condoms and avoid sex with multiple partners. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
